Antonio da Correggio
The Rest on the Flight to Egypt with Saint Francis

1517
Oil on canvas
Uffizi Gallery, Florence

Striving to express a sense of calm and repose, Correggio does not entirely exclude the miraculous but he does minimize it. Only a dark spot on Francis's right palm refers to his stigmata. In the legends the palm tree bent down to give the family its fruit, but here it is in the background and Joseph is the one who pulls down one of its branches and hands a date to the boy. The legends also had the tree moving its roots to expose a spring for the family to drink from. Here all we see is a basin.
